2012 Summer Concert Series Sneak Peek

Come listen to these performers playin’ their music in the sun during the 2012 Outdoor Summer Concert Series. We don’t have the full lineup yet, but we wanted to share four shows that are confirmed:

The B-52s June 1

Rooted in New Wave and 1960’s rock in roll, The B-52s have created their own “guy vs. gals” vocal trademark style, highlighted in their hit, “Love Shack.” The band’s name comes from a particular beehive hairdo that resembles the nose cone of the aircraft of the same name. Forming in 1976, The B-52s continue to present themselves as a positive, enthusiastic, slightly oddball party band, who tell tales that glorify wild youth and celebrate romance.

Their first single, “Rock Lobster,” was an underground success which launched their career in the late seventies. In 1989, “Love Shack” became their first top-40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached #3 on the charts. Its current members include Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Fred Schneider as vocals, Keith Strickland on guitar, Tracy Wormworth on bass, Sterling Campbell on drums and Paul Gordon on keyboards.

Steve Miller Band June 17

Producing number one hits like “The Joker,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock’N Me” and “Abracadabra,” the Steve Miller Band is considered a classic rock legend. Since forming in sunny California in 1968, the band has released more than 18 studio albums, three live albums, seven compilation albums and numerous singles. Their resume includes performing, collaborating or producing with fellow music idols Chuck Berry, Paul McCartney, The Grateful Dead, Flyn Johns and many others over their prestigious music careers.

After more than fifteen years, Steve Miller recently went back to make a new album with classic rock engineer, Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones) and the band produced almost three dozen tracks. “Bingo!,” the first album from the sessions, was released in May 2010. The announcement of the 2012 touring season by the Steve Miller Band follows three of the most productive years of the long career of Steve Miller.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals August 16

A rock band with six albums under its belt, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are like a modern-day version of Tina Turner fronting the Rolling Stones. Their latest album “The Lion The Beast The Beat” is scheduled to be released this spring. The Vermont-based band has a new five-piece configuration of keyboardist Grace Potter, lead guitarist Scott Tournet and drummer Matt Bur,  joined by bassist Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Hem) and rhythm guitarist Benny Yurco, who also plays with Tournet and Burr in the GPN side project Blues & Lasers.

Because of their ready acceptance on the U.S. touring circuit, they regularly play as many as 200 shows a year, shaping and sharpening their sound with each show. With the 2009 arrivals of Popper and Yurco, the Nocturnals are entering the next phase of their evolution as a band with a more fine-tuned sound.

Wynton Marsalis August 29

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, bandleader and educator and is the world’s first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full jazz spectrum. In 1997, he became the first jazz musician ever to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields.

Marsalis assembled his own band in 1981 and hit the road, performing over 120 concerts every year for 15 consecutive years. Through his musicianship, and exhaustive series of performances and music workshops, Marsalis rekindled widespread interest in jazz worldwide. He became the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards for both jazz and classical records in 1983 and repeated the distinction by winning jazz and classical Grammy Awards again the following year. Today Marsalis is the only artist ever to win Grammy Awards over five consecutive years (1983-87).

Prices will be announced with the full lineup in mid-April. Tickets go on sale to Members on April 28 at 9 a.m. and to the public on May 12 at 9 a.m., so mark your calendars!
